Lowering Options
Lowering springs replace the standard springs; the standard dampers remain. Fixed drop, simplest option.
Sport suspension – matched springs and dampers, fixed height, firmer handling.
Coilovers – spring and damper as one unit with adjustable height, sometimes adjustable damping.
Air suspension – height adjustable via air bags; more complex and usually the most expensive.
Vehicles with adaptive dampers or level control need their electronics considered before buying parts.
ABE, Parts Certificate or Individual Approval?
ABE (general type approval) – usually no registration entry needed, but the document must be carried and its conditions followed.
Parts certificate (Teilegutachten) – after installation an officially recognised inspector (e.g. TÜV, DEKRA, GTÜ, KÜS) checks and confirms the modification.
Individual approval – for parts without suitable documents; complex and not always successful.
⚠️ Without valid documents or the required inspection, the vehicle's type approval may lapse, with possible fines and insurance issues.
After Installation
• Wheel alignment – camber and toe change with ride height
• Headlight adjustment – beam range changes with vehicle height
• Clearance – wheels must not rub at full lock or compression
• Settling – new springs settle slightly over the first kilometres
• Inform your insurer about technical modifications
Combining lowering with new wheels or spacers? Plan them together – all certificates must be compatible. See our tire service.
