Where can the smell come from?
Moisture and deposits on the evaporator can contribute to odours. A dirty cabin filter is another possible source. Smell alone does not identify the affected component. Note whether it occurs at startup, throughout a journey or with cooling switched off.
What does the cabin filter do?
Cabin filters capture particles such as dust and pollen. Activated-carbon filters can also reduce certain gases and odours. Use a filter suitable for the vehicle. ADAC recommends annual replacement; also consult your vehicle maintenance schedule.
Cleaning or refrigerant service?
Cleaning concerns the air side of the system; refrigerant service concerns the cooling circuit. When booking, distinguish unwanted odours from weak cooling. If both occur, mention both. Ask which checks and tasks are included in the quote.
Will a scented spray solve it?
A pleasant fragrance does not demonstrate that the system is clean. ADAC advises against using one-shot aerosol cans as a substitute for professional cleaning. Ask the workshop to investigate recurring smells.
What should you tell the workshop?
Prepare your vehicle model and year, when the smell occurs, whether cooling is normal, the date of the last filter change and details of previous cleaning. Request an itemised scope covering inspection, filter replacement, cleaning and any additional work. Agree the price and scope for your vehicle before authorising the work.
