How Deep Is the Scratch?
Vehicle paint consists of multiple layers: primer, base coat (colour), and clear coat (transparent protective layer). The depth of damage determines the correct repair method:
• **Very light surface marks / swirl marks** — only in the top clear coat, barely perceptible
• **Clear coat scratches** — visible but colour layer not reached
• **Deeper paint damage** — colour layer breached
• **Damage down to primer or metal** — corrosion risk
A reliable assessment is safest at the vehicle itself. Photos give a first indication but don't replace professional inspection.
When Is Polishing Enough?
Polishing removes a very thin layer of clear coat, smoothing suitable surface defects:
• Swirl marks and wash scratches
• Light holograms
• Matte spots in clear coat
**Limits:** Polishing can only smooth material that's still present. If the scratch is deeper than the clear coat, polishing alone cannot fully remove it.
When Is Smart Repair Appropriate?
Smart Repair (spot repair) is a method for local repair of small damage without repainting the entire panel:
• Small local scratches beyond polishing
• Limited paint chips
• Light bumper damage
• Small dents (depending on method)
• Parking scrapes
When Is Respraying Necessary?
A respray is necessary when damage is too large, too deep, or too complex for local repair:
• Large scratches across multiple panels
• Deep paint damage with exposed metal
• Accident damage with deformation
• Advanced corrosion
Photograph the Damage Instead of Guessing
